Each family at the studio received a link to our competition Google Drive folder via email. Please bookmark the FOLDER, not individual documents as documents change frequently. It will be very important for families to read and be familiar with the syllabus, rules of each festival and to discuss this with your choreographer so as to avoid any risk of disqualification.

Again this year, we are GOING GREEN and using a digital format for all competition registrations. All festival entries need to be submitted online, through the studio, so please watch for registration opening and closing dates as they will be strictly adhered to.

There are two types of festivals:

1. Open Festival

Participation in these festivals is open to all dancers.

2. Closed Festival – By Teacher Recommendation Only
Participation in these festivals (Victoria DanceWorks – Competition Section) is through teacher recommendation only. Students will need to approach BOTH of their choreographers for any given section (Ballet or Jazz or Contemporary / Modern or Tap) and ask to be recommended to do the festival. If your choreographer is not Kirkwood faculty, you will need to request approval from them and they must email festival@kirkwoodacademy.com.  If you are wanting to attend multiple days, you must approach each individual choreographer to ask for recommendation and EVERY choreographer must agree to put the dancer and choreography forward. Festival registrations will not be completed without prior consent of choreographers.

Welcome to the world of dance competitions!

There’s nothing like a dance competition for excitement, energy, costumes, and unforgettable stage moments. The competition aims to create an inspiring and sometimes challenging experience for dancers, parents, and fans. It’s easy to make your competition journey fun and rewarding with a few fun tips!

Finding the right competition
Many types of dance competitions exist, with different levels, formats, and styles. Different categories are available, from ballet to hip-hop, for all ages and skill levels. Some dancers compete solo, others as duos or groups. Check out the rules before entering a competition, as they ensure everyone has a great time! Each competition has its own unique feel, so pick one that suits your style and goals.

Build confidence and skills through preparation
When preparing for a competition, focusing on technique, choreography, and finer details is important. It’s common for dancers to begin practicing months in advance, using each practice to build confidence and polish their performance. A smooth, successful day starts with double-checking costumes and essentials like water and snacks.

The competition day: organize, stay calm, and prepare
It’s time to go live! The stage is set, the audience is ready, and the energy is high! On competition day, things move quickly, so knowing what’s on your schedule is essential. Navigating dressing rooms, warm-up areas, and backstage spaces can be daunting, but staying calm and organized will help you shine on stage.

Engaging with friends and receiving feedback
The judges’ feedback is one of the most exciting parts of the competition. Embrace their advice as a way to improve and grow! Additionally, competitions are a great way to meet other dancers. Supporting your fellow competitors creates a friendly, positive atmosphere.

Winning, losing, and learning
Every competition day offers the chance to grow, regardless of how big the win or challenge may be. Take note of what went well and what can be improved next time. Participating in these events strengthens your skills and builds confidence, so every experience is valuable.

Take time to reflect and set new goals
Take some time after the competition to reflect on what you learned. Which moments made you feel strong? Did you encounter any challenges? Dance competitions build your resilience, confidence, and memories, making you a better dancer every time you perform.
