PERFORMANCE & EXAM CLASSES

The Kirkwood Academy Open Division provides classes for every dancer, ages 7 to 18, for those with any level of dance experience. Ballet is fundamental training for all students wishing to dance and it is one of the classes almost every student takes*. Additional classes include: modern, tap, jazz, pointe, contemporary, acro and musical theatre.

We have many exciting dance opportunities to help build confidence and technique as well as provide memories to cherish. All dancers have the opportunity to learn choreography and perform in our Year End Show on the first Sunday in June. In ballet, modern and tap, many classes have the opportunity to learn exam work and perform their syllabus in front of an examiner. Performing group dances, as well as solos or duets, in the Upper Island Musical Festival at Beban Park is also a highlight for many dancers. Often more experienced classes also perform at other festivals, such as CoreDance and Peak, held at the Port Theatre, and at Festival du Ballet in Surrey. Finally, depending on the year, we do a ballet production, such as The Nutcracker or Coppélia, or a Musical Theatre production, such as Seussical or Annie. Each dancer in our Open Program can be involved in these.

Kirkwood classes offer so many opportunities for both boys and girls of all ages and levels of experience. We welcome you to our dance community!

*At Kirkwood Academy, we entrust our faculty to make all class placement decisions. Dancers will be placed into designated classes based on their technique, attitude, attendance, effort and past history of his/her adherence to the policies of Kirkwood Academy. Thank you in advance for your understanding that we ALWAYS have the dancer’s best interest in mind while making these placements.

Ballet is fundamental training for all dance and as such, we have prerequisites in place requiring inclusion in ballet prior to registration into other classes such as modern and jazz.  Please let us know if you have any questions.
